• The Play Truck concept is the result of an innovative solution lead by Karen Shields, General Manager of the Counties Manukau Kindergarten Association (CMKA) to increase participation in Early Childhood Education for our most vulnerable families. The goal is to create an informal ECE experience by setting up playgroup activities in the Manurewa-Takanini area, providing a minimum of 3 opportunities a week at schools, community venues/events or even located safely in streets.
  • Two coordinators, Lyle and Amber currently operate the Play Truck 25 hours per week, and set up a range of ECE experiences for children and whanau. Safety is ensured with mobile fencing around the truck. The coordinators build relationships with parents and provide information about local and affordable ECE options.
  • The Play Truck was funded through the Ministry of Education Targeted Assistance For Participation (TAP) 3. This funding covered the purchase of the truck and costs to transform to a mobile play space. All the salaries of the coordinators come from CMKA budget.
  • The Play Truck contract with the Ministry is for two years 2013/2014 and we were asked to find 40 non-participating children each year and make 40 visits per annum. The Play Truck commenced operation in June 2013 and by December 2013 had found nearly 100 children and made 100 visits. It has been an overwhelming success and exceeded all our expectations. We have managed to build relationships with children and whanau where other community initiatives have failed in a very low socio economic and vulnerable communities. We are making a huge difference and are very excited about the positive impact we make.
